Students...shirts...science!

May 30, 2024

Students in Dr. Figueiredo’s AP Chemistry class learned that the dyes in tie dying kits are called ‘fiber reactive dyes.’ These molecules actually form covalent bonds with cellulose fibers in the fabric, that’s why they won’t wash away!

To consider this idea, students made their own shirts and will test the tenacity of these covalent bonds as they wash and dry their tee shirts!
